Background/Objective: Nurses working in intensive care and palliative care units with severe and complex care requirements frequently encounter unexpected situations, and these situations may cause nurses to experience ethical dilemmas and have difficulty in the decision-making process. This research was conducted to evaluate the ethical attitudes and moral sensitivities of palliative and intensive care nurses.
Material and Method: The study was of cross-sectional type. The research was conducted with nurses working in the palliative and intensive care units of a hospital. In order to collect data, the Nurse Information Form, "Ethical Attitude Scale for Nursing Care", and "Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire" created by the researchers were used. Data were collected by face-to-face interview method between June and September 2022.
Results: It was determined that the average age of the nurses participating in the study was 28.6±7.02 years, 64.1% were women, and 75.7% worked in intensive care. It was determined that the nurses received a total of 150.1±22.2 points from the ethical attitude scale in nursing care and their ethical attitudes were positive, and they received a total of 71.1±32.3 points from the moral sensitivity survey and their moral sensitivity was also high. The difference between the variables of education level of nurses, the clinic worked and receiving training on ethics and the Ethical Attitudes in Care Scale is significant (p<0.05), and the difference between the variables of working time, the clinic worked and receiving training on ethics and the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire is significant (p<0.05).
Conclusions: It was determined that palliative and intensive care nurses had high levels of ethical attitudes and moral sensitivity in care. The level of education, the clinic worked and the status of receiving ethics-related training affect ethical attitudes; the duration of work, the clinic worked and the status of receiving ethics-related training affected moral sensitivity. It was also determined that there was a positive relationship between moral sensitivity and ethical attitude.
